Handwriting

At Barnes Farm Infant School, our children begin their writing journey practising fine motor skills through threading, weaving, painting and manipulation of playdough in EYFS.  As soon as a child is able to correctly hold a pencil, they begin to learn how to write their name. We use a Nelson handwriting and letter formation to teach children how to form their letters. Letters are taught following the childrens phonic knowledge in Reception. This then progresses to letter families in year 1 before children begin to join their letters when ready in year 2. Children are taught handwriting during weekly handwriting sessions and this is then reinforced and practised throughout the week.
