REAL LIFE LEARNING IDEAS FOR HOME

Writing/ spelling suggestions

  • Write a birthday, Christmas or general shopping list

  • Create a comic strip about something that happened in the day

  • Write a letter to grandparents, other family members or friends

  • Write a thank you letter

  • Send a postcard when on holiday

  • Create a scrapbook of things you see and label them

  • Have a whiteboard or chalkboard at home to write messages to each other

  • Write and put post it note messages around the house for each other

  • Write a book review

  • Create a journal from being on holiday, from the weekend or special events

  • Create your own dictionary of words

  • Create a TV guide

  • Write a To-do list for chores around the house

Maths suggestions

  • Follow a recipe by measuring the amount required

  • Add up the total of the weekly food shop and/or find the change

  • Create a birthday or Christmas wish list to a given budget using a toy catalogue

  • Look for numbers when going on a walk what can you do with the numbers collected? (add them, find a pattern, take them away from each other)

  • Practising estimation (How many toys are on the bed, how many pasta shapes are on your plate etc)

  • Point out patterns you can see around the home or out and about. Try following a pattern someone else has started and continue the pattern on your own. Make a pattern using pebbles, pegs or pieces of coloured paper. What patterns can you see around you?

  • Count the steps you take (1s, 2s, 5s, 10s etc)

  • Collect objects from the outdoors, like stones, leaves or twigs. Sort them into groups and count how many items are in each group. How many items are there in your favourite collection?

  • Explore ways of measuring foot prints or hand lengths. Measure the height of people in your family. Who is the tallest? Who is the shortest?

  • Seek out shapes. Start and finish a jigsaw puzzle. When you wipe down the table after a meal, talk about which side of the table is longer, shorter, what’s its shape? Can you draw some of the shapes you can see inside your house?

  • Stack building blocks. Build a tower as high as you can. Can you build a tower that is taller than you are? What other structures can you make with building blocks?

  • Read posters in shop windows

  • Read road signs when on a walk or in the car

  • Read food labels

  • Read a recipe

  • Read a magazine

  • Read post it note messages that you have written around the house of each other

  • Go to the library and choose a book to read

  • Share books together and ask each other questions about what has happened in the story
