#LetsGetSilly for Silly Squad, Summer Reading Challenge 2020

Reading is at the heart of everything e do at BFIS.  We are very excited as always to announce that Essex Libraries have announced their 'Summer Reading Challenge' which we know that many of our children enjoy.

Usually we would launch this in school and have a visitor from Essex Library Services come in to tell us all about it but sadly we unable to do this.  Please find the information below if you would like your family to take part.

The Summer Reading Challenge 2020 is here! This year’s theme is Silly Squad, a celebration of funny books, happiness and laughter. Children can join in with the digital challenge on the amazing new summer reading challenge website at sillysquad.org.uk.

Signing up is easy. A child creates their own account and their parent/carer is sent an email to verify it. Then children can choose a character avatar, set their own reading goals (which they can change later) and will get a silly name to use on the website from the random name generator.

As they read books towards their own reading goal children will unlock digital rewards, activities and videos and an online certificate for achieving their goal. If they’re stuck for what to read next, they can get a recommendation from the Book Sorter. The summer reading challenge website also offers games, puzzles, quizzes and competitions to keep children entertained all summer long.

Anything they read counts including comics, magazines, e-books and – for this year only - your child can read one of their own books!

Thursday 16th July - Reading Together Day

Families across the country are invited to take part in the celebration of reading together on 16 July as part of the Reading Together Day, coordinated by The Reading Agency. The day will showcase a shared schedule of events featuring collaborators including Authors Aloud UK, Arts Council England, ASCEL, BookTrust, British Library, CILIP, Coram Beanstalk, Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Department for Education, Dollywood Foundation, Libraries Connected, National Literacy Trust, Open University, Pearson, Publishers Association, School Library Association and World Book Day.

As families and individuals grapple with the challenges of school changes, loss of support networks and the implementation of social distancing, the aim of the Reading Together Day is to bring families, friends, schools and wider communities together - starting conversations, sharing stories, making connections, celebrating reading and having fun. People of all ages are invited to take part in sharing the love of reading for pleasure, to help build skills, increase confidence, support educational attainment and improve wellbeing.

Friday 17th July - World Emoji Day

In recent years July the 17th has been known as World Emoji Day, chosen because the calendar emoji is depicted with the date of the 17th as it’s image.

Emoji’s have actually been used since the beginning of the Internet, however their popularity has increased on a massive scale with the modern day smartphone having them built into our messaging dashboards, well known emoji merchandise on sale around the world and even an emoji movie in honour of them.

Have a look through your messages and see which is your most used emoji and what this says about you.

Can you child send their teacher a message using emojis to tell them about something they enjoy.

Happy World Emoji Day!
